Start Small, Think Big!
Oprah Winfrey has done a significant amount of charitable work to consider her a hero. She has donated more than 40 million dollars to charities and counting! “Use your life to serve the world, and you will find it also serves you” – Oprah WinfreyNot only her donating the money but she also raises awareness for different charities in many ways to get the public to donate. She raised awareness on her show The Oprah Winfrey Show. She used her on-air time to talk about different charities. She wanted herself and people to make a difference in the world. For example, in a 1997 show, she wanted her viewers to donate so that 150 scholarships could be given through The Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and that 200 homes could be built in Africa. What started as a small campaign has grown into what it’s known today as Oprah’s Angel Network. Her charity has done many different things for the less fortunate. Just to name a few they built over 55 schools with Free the Children in 12 different countries so that children could finally have to chance to go to school! A charity affiliated with Oprah’s Angel Network donated $725,000 toward renovating a school in South Africa. Thanks to Oprah’s great idea, they are not only building schools, but they are also fixing ones that are damaged!
To go with the schools, Oprah’s Angel Network donated 1 million dollars worth of school supplies to South African school. Also in efforts to aid the hurricane Katrina victims, Oprah’s Angel Network Built or restored 300 homes in many different places. What started as a small way to help people, has skyrocketed into Oprah’s Angel network just because of one idea. I know this was not just a one-time thing because Oprah continues to help those in need every year, if its donating, or raising awareness, she’s always helping those in need!
A More Hands-on Approach
Oprah has donated money and got others to donate money to many charities and places that need it the most. She also volunteered her time with people or other charities. Oprah also has hands-on approaches to help aid those in need, by not just donating but actually traveling to these 3rd world countries to help. For example, she’s helped build many schools in Africa, so that the less fortunate can go to school and learn just like everyone else! But she doesn’t just stop there, after she builds the school she does frequent visits to them. In 2009 Oprah visited an art show at her school in South Africa. She supported the girls and said she was overwhelmed by the talent of the girls and said she was very proud of them and how far they and their talents have come!
She frequently visits Africa on her own time, never getting paid, but just to make someone’s day better, or to support her students! For the children seeing someone famous that can talk to them and inspire them can really give them hope. This happened many times including in 2016 when Oprah was in Africa celebrating the sixth graduating class of her Leadership Academy for Girls.”Oprah attending one of her schools in Africa to celebrate the graduation of her students”she attended a US embassy event to speak to young girls of the DREAMS program. She spoke to the girls about many different things. She told them “be the change they want to see” in their communities. Inspiring them to give back to the community and make a difference in the world… just like she did! Yes donating to them, makes them happy, but traveling to where they live and visit them, can make them happy for months!
Donate, Donate and Donate
All of Oprah’s actions really leave an impression on us and the charities that she helps! But the charities need money! To do many of the things they do to help the people in need they need lots of money. Many charities build new schools for children so that they can have an education and learn like other children. This costs lots of money, without this money they cannot achieve these and many other goals that they have on their to-do list. But some celebrities make it easier for these charities and make their job faster and easier. The main example of a celebrity is Oprah Winfrey. She has donated over 40 million dollars to various charities to help people in need.”An example of where 1 million of the 40 million has gone to was N Street Village, an organization that helps homeless women DC.”But not only donating to these charities directly. She has also donated money to building her own charity (Oprah’s Angel Network) and supporting the charity and funding it for all their projects because it is her charity. On another airing of the Oprah Winfrey show, she gave 300 audience members of her show $1000 to donate to a charity of their choice! This helps to spread out the donations… instead of just putting $300000 toward one charity, she spits it up for 300 people so that a wide variety of different charities receive the donations, smaller but still helpful.
Now finally if all these amazing things Oprah Winfrey has done for society doesn’t amaze you… then wait until you hear this! In Oprah’s will, she has decided that she wants 1 Billion dollars to go to charity! Yes… 1 Billion. This money could be put towards her family or anything else of her choice. This proves to me that Oprah really is a charitable, and inspiring person… she is a Hero. She doesn’t just donate to get the publicity, because even after she dies she wants money to go to charity. This inspires me to be a better person just like Oprah. Once again Oprah has fulfilled one of her purposes, inspire someone to be a better person, and to make a difference.
Step Aside Spider Man, There’s a New Hero in Town!
Oprah Winfrey says “Use your life to serve the world, and you will find it also serves you”. I think Oprah has used her life to serve the world just like a hero! She has made a huge difference. Now that she has served the world she wants all of us to use that quote as inspiration, and also serve the world! Just remember what Oprah has accomplished. She built schools in Africa for children so they can learn. She took a hands-on approach with the less fortunate and traveled to third world countries like Africa to meet with the children. She has donated to various charities so they can help the children that need help! Finally, she created her own charity because she felt she needed to get more involved and make a difference. Look back to what Oprah has done… it will inspire you to be a better person, and make a difference. Oprah’s may not be jumping building to building, shooting webs out of her wrists and saving civilians, but I still consider her a Hero!
