The earth has a vast range of landscapes, including the mountainous landscapes, islands and coastal landscapes, also tropical rainforests and tropical region. Globally, the tropical lands have a coastline of over 60 000 kilometers attracting legion tourists once a year with these numbers rising dramatically in recent times. Coastal landscapes in islands is the best places that the most people will explore more on the natural environments that brings a feel of calmness and spend an aware on the limited tropical ‘virgin forest’. In other words, coastal areas are transmutation areas between the land and sea characterized by a very high multifariousness and they embody a number of the richest and most fragile ecosystems on earth, like mangroves and coral reefs (Alongi, 2002). In tropical shallow waters, mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs are typically situated adjacent to every different constituting a mosaic of interlinked patches, forming what is typically stated as “the tropical seascape” (Ogden, 1988). At the same time, coasts are under very high population pressure due to rapid urbanization processes. As advocacy of the preservation, restoration, or improvement of the natural environment; there is more ethical of the movement that seeks to improve and protect the quality of the natural environment through changes to environmentally harmful by human activities, in otherwise to through the adoption of forms that are thought to be necessary for, at least conducive to the benign treatment of the environment by humans and through assessment of humanity’s relationship with nature. Development methods and approaches have been changing world wide to adopt the concept of sustainability into the planning and design of the built environment. To build, by definition, means to make a lasting impact on the environment. Also how the natural systems function, remain diverse and produce everything it needs for ecology to remain in balance. By alliance of small island developing states in its 1994 Barbados Programme for Action (WMO 1995), the trend was also noted, the focus on tourist developments is nowadays firmly trained on previously untouched or undeveloped areas. Which means, the only targeted tropical parts of the coast will remains its only on unspoilt part, the only refuge for many endangered animals and the only remaining habitat for many endangered plants.
As to be known, eco-resorts is a describing as a terms after the eco-tourism that commit with the “eco” ecological which means the biodiversity that could be describe on the water management. “Ecology” is a branch of biology that attempts to understand the relationship between living organisms and their environment. ‘Ecologically sustainable (tourist) development’. The eco-resort has to draw on and blend with the local natural and cultural environments by employing principles of Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD). According to Krippendoft (1986), the existence of a group of travellers who demands the kind of tourism that is concerned with environmentally conscious has helped develop this concept worldwide. These developments are also helped by the existence of ‘green’ tourists, especially from developed countries who have lost their natural habitat in their respective countries and want the environment in the locations visited was in a preserved. Some destinations becoming less popular places of outstanding natural beauty, particularly in developing in countries, also have to respond to the pressures of providing a good quality yet competitive resorts. Mainly, coastal zones have perpetually attracted humans due to their wealthy resources, significantly their offer of subsistence resources; for provision reasons, as they provide access points to marine trade and transport; for recreational or cultural activities; or just due to their special sense of place at the interface between land and sea. Generally, eco resorts may actively contribute to trail maintenance, and personal services that relates to the natural health or the monitoring of visitor use, depending on the local situation (TIES, 1993). The different of eco resort than other approaches is an establishment where providing hospitality or amenities services to the eco tourist while performing ecotourism principles. It is also frequently contribute towards maintaining official protected areas, because they are often quite dependent on proper management of government-controlled reserves.
The issues and problem statement will cover a several important aspects of restoration the environments of islands coastal landscape by developing the eco-resort. With mounting evidence of growing disruption of the ecological balance, the challenge of ensuring human well-being for present and future generations is of concern from local to global levels. The damage does not end with the construction of tourist infrastructure. Some tourist resorts empty their sewage and other wastes directly into water surrounding coral reefs and other sensitive marine habitats. Recreational activities also have a huge impact on natural environments. (UNWTO, World Tourism Organization) According to the positive and practical approach, there is one aspect of which was the effort to promote an ecological consciousness and an ethic of “stewardship” of the environment. There is more concerned on human welfare ecology-which the aims to enhance human life by creating a safe and clean environment, that was a part of a broader concern with distributive justice and reflected tendency, to place more importance on “quality of life” issues than on traditional economic concerns. Some facts mentioned in the eco-tourism statistical fact sheet (2000) and Global eco-tourism fact sheet of TIES (2006) clearly shows, the compared to Sri Lanka, other Asian, African and European countries are having many demands for eco-tourism and eco-resorts. There is many eco-resorts marketing as environmental friendly, but in fact destroying the every eco system they claim to protect. Some activities that provide by tourist or local people itself, they never responsible on environmentalism concern and it causing the carbon footprints on the sensitive area. Some foods, plastics, and wastage into the places can disrupt wildlife, resulting in changes to their feeding. This can consequently accelerate the damage of natural environments and ecosystems. Aside from that, resorts and hotels in native areas will incur the environmental impacts due it will cause severe climate changes and immense loss of biodiversity. According to the sufficiency economy, land use fundamental is key to the biosphere because it spares the realm from the loss biodiversity and promote the sustainability.
The purpose of this study is to review recent research of developing the eco resort towards revitalize the environments of islands coastal landscape. The research will be based on its landscape elements and the current of global issues.
Research objective In arrange to get the most extreme result of this research’s aim, the following are the objectives of the study, which are:
To determine the study of environments sustainability of islands coastal landscape.
To come out with recommendations for a landscape guideline design of eco resort.
Scope of study
Based on the issues that have been identified, this study will focusing on how to develop and to get knowledge on the function of eco resort towards environments restoration of islands coastal landscape. This study will help on how to propose an activity towards sustainability approaches which is it can be the negative impact on natural environmentalism. Besides that, this study will classify the types of eco resort and also specified the activities that can be propose for eco resort along the coastal area. While the tourism being the largest foreign income generator world tourism trend is moving from generic or bulk tourism to more of specific sectors like eco-tourism. Moreover, this research study will foresee into the design practices of eco-resorts towards the sustainability approaches to help it in designing process. Last but not least, on this study will also identify what is the definition of eco-resort and how to sustain the ecosystem of island, besides that can help to raise the legion of eco-tourist in Malaysia.
The natural resources in Malaysia need to be restore the environments sustainability of islands coastal landscape. Also need to be developed to fulfil the ecotourism demands which have been a popular trend of tourism for eco resort. Eco resort is one way to develop the area of nature based in attracting tourist towards appreciate the ‘virgin islands at the site. Therefore, it is important to know the guidelines of designing the eco-resort to achieve a successful sustainability environments of islands coastal landscape. In order not only promote and approach the natural resources, besides that can improve the tourism economic growth and to educate people to be more appreciate the nature and play a good role to protect the landscape environmental.
